If you’re worried about your effect on the world’s climate, these cows can help.
Dairy cows in the Chino basin are being pressed into service in the campaign to curb global warming by reducing carbon emissions into the atmosphere.
Their waste is collected and placed in a “digester” run by the Inland Empire Utilities Agency; the methane gas that results from breaking it down is burned or used as fuel — not released into the atmosphere.
Since methane is a potent greenhouse gas, helping to trap atmospheric heat, preventing its release can, in a small way, help curb climate change.
The methane system is on a list of “carbon offset” projects. Consumers or business owners can purchase offsets and reduce their own “carbon footprint.” The money is invested in the project.
