Prop. 10: the supporters speak

November 6th, 2008, 4:42 pm · 4 Comments · posted by

Supporters of California’s defeated Prop. 10, which would have authorized a $5 billion bond issue to encourage the use of alternative energy, say the need to broaden the use of alternative energy will continue.

“I do think Californians are supportive of getting more of their power generation from alternative sources,” said Amy Thoma, spokeswoman for the group, Yes on 10. “I think it was a matter of voters being bummed out by the economy.”

A statement from Clean Energy Fuels of Seal Beach, whose part owner, T. Boone Pickens, pumped a large amount of money into support for Prop. 10, said that while the company might have benefitted from the proposition’s passage, demand will continue for their product, natural gas for transportation fuel.

“We supported the initiative, and while Prop. 10 may have served as a catalyst to accelerate our growth, its failure does not reduce our opportunities,” said the statement from Andrew J. Littlefair, president and CEO of Clean Energy.

I hope Obama follows through on his promises to lead America into Energy Independence. This past year the high cost of gas has strained our economy and damaged our society.OPEC just cut production and gas will be rising again soon. WE have spent trillions on bail outs and stimulus checks. Our nation needs to invest in renewable energy and strive to become energy independent. Wind, solar and electric cars could replace a huge percentage of imported oil. We could produce cheap electricity and at the same time create millions of badly needed jobs. Renewable energy would be a win-win situation for our nation. Jeff Wilson just wrote a book called The Manhattan Project of 2009 Energy Independence NOW. I highly recommend this book for anyone concerned about our economy and our dependence on foreign oil. http://www.themanhattanprojcetof2009.com

Prop 10 failed because voters saw through the $23 million in deceptive TV ads. EVERY other bond measure on the California ballot won approval, with a combined taxpayer price tag of $23 billions, proof that voters were not bummed out by the economy. They were bummed out by Prop 10, a bad ballot measure that didn’t advance the environmental or alternative energy agenda, but did serve the profit motive of its sponsoring corporation and Boone. Pickens. Never before have we seen one corporation spend so shamelessly to win a ballot measure that was written for its own enrichment All the money in the world failed to buy the vote. This is a tribute to voters’ common sense.
