Whale tangled in fishing line spotted offshore

January 16th, 2009, 9:03 am · 2 Comments · posted by

The Coast Guard wants the public’s help to track down a whale tangled in fishing line, spotted off San Pedro Tuesday.

The whale’s species is so far unknown, but it does not appear to be a gray whale or a hump back, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

The whale was last seen heading west from Long Beach.

A Coast Guard statement asks mariners to call NOAA at 562-980-4017, or contact Coast Guard officials on marine channel 16, if they spot the whale.

If the whale is found, rescuers could attempt to cut it free.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

  • I spotted a beached whale Monday at Newport Pier but after a hour of tanning she lumbered up into the parking lot & her SUV and drove off making the beach a much more pleasant of a sight :)

If Whale’s had arms and legs, they would walk ashore and kick our butts, for treating them like fish for the last thousand years!
