Governor announces ‘green’ jobs for at-risk youth

March 16th, 2009, 4:09 pm · 5 Comments · posted by

In one of the first uses in California of federal stimulus dollars, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger on Monday launched the California “Green Corps,” in which young adults ages 16 to 24 and labeled “at risk” will be placed in green jobs.

The $20 million program — half of that from federal stimulus funds, half from public-private partnerships — will place at least 1,000 at-risk youths in one of 10 corps statewide over a period of 20 months. At least one regional location is planned for Southern California, although the exact site has not yet been chosen. “At risk” includes those believed to be at risk for becoming involved in such things as crime, drugs, or teen pregnancy — youngsters who are often also underprivileged. They’ll include green job training with a stipend, as yet to be determined, along with education and community service, an announcement from the governor’s office said. Job placement also would be included, a spokeswoman said.

The jobs might include construction workers, sales people, computer technicians and other categories.

Why would those ” at risk” youth take a minimum wager when they can turn 100K selling meth? How about jobs for the rest?

How about jobs for people at risk of losing their homes, their cars, their everything because of the jerks in the state legislature that have raised taxes by $70 Billion during a recession.

Assuming all $20M goes to wages, that works out to 14 months at minimum wage. Whoppee ! They could wind up receiving almost as much in Unemployment Insuance after the program expires. Brilliant !
