Live climate debate: What was that about Al Gore?

March 19th, 2009, 9:01 am · 5 Comments · posted by

The conversation is beginning at UC Irvine’s “The Climate Change Dilemma … And Why People Hate Al Gore.” Held by the University’s Prosperitas group, part of the Paul Merage School of Business, the idea of the forum is to talk about the debate over climate change, and whether Al Gore is a powerful advocate or a polarizing figure.

Meet the participants:

Michael Prather, director of UC Irvine’s Environmental Institute, holds the Fred Kavli chair and is a professor of Earth System Science who has served on the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.

Brian Dunning, host and producer of the science podcast, “Skeptoid: Critical Analysis of Pop Phenomena,” which seeks to apply critical thinking to paranormal and pseudoscientific subjects.

John Coleman, founder of the Weather Channel, who does not accept the theory of global warming.

The discussion is being moderated by Orange County Register science editor Gary Robbins.

I was amused — no, shocked — that the BASIC premise i.e., CO2, the ‘greenhouse gas’, was almost totally ignored during this debate. With the exception of Mr. Coleman, none of the ‘experts’ wanted to discuss this ‘hinge’ factor at all. All that seemed important to the ‘academic’s’ was “Who got published?” Who cares, other than their private little community!

Needless to say, while I did respect the deportment of all concerned, I didn’t feel the BIG MONEY issue was touched at all. How sad –

  • William Diepenbrock, Editor says:

So is your view that CO2 isn’t a greenhouse gas, or simply not the biggest of those to worry about? And please, elaborate on how that’s a big money issue…

  • Larry Hamlin says:

Disappointing discussion. Key issues including IPCC use of clearly suspect land and sea surface temperature data versus much more accurate satellite temperature data, recent global cooling trends not predicted by any climate models, incorrect IPCC comments about increased Atlantic hurricane frequencies and many more IPCC scientific shortcomings were not addressed.
Mr. Prather arrogantly held the IPCC political line that skeptics are irrelevant but the IPCC scientific failures continue to grow and the scientific skeptics are growing by leaps and bounds as a consequence.

    MY Humble opinion
    Both Sides Exaggerate their claims

    on the Al Gore side-
Typically Spoiled Americans Dont Take Action Until The Sky is Already Falling…..soooooooo..

The for profit- Other side wants to convince we can rape the earth for profit while singing through the smog “YOU can see forever and ever and ever more…” When you can’t.

So, after i got the hint how this was going to be – i decided not to even go .
