About 50 bank employees stepped into the fields Wednesday in Irvine to “glean” cabbage and lettuce — that is, harvest everything, even the oddly shaped items that wouldn’t make it into a grocery store.
The employees from Bank of America also brought a check for $30,000 for the Second Harvest Food Bank of Orange County. Merrill Lynch and Countrywide employees also took part in the gleaning.
The bank employees picked the produce, which will be distributed to needy families, from the Food Bank’s agricultural fields known as the Incredible Edible Park.
The fields are harvested “a couple of times a week,” said Audra Aucoin, a development supervisor and grant writer at the Food Bank — but not normally by 50 bank employees.
“It went really well,” she said.
