Visions of an environmentally friendly, “green” wedding run from the spartan to the bizarre: eloping “on a bicycle” or performing druidic rites in a forest. Or, as it was put by Delilah Snell, proprietor of the “Road Less Traveled” store in Santa Ana:
“When you hear the term ‘green wedding,’ most brides-to-be no doubt tremble with thoughts of patchouli, bizarre ceremonies and more hemp than chiffon. But that’s SO 1960s: a modern-day wedding, with minor modifications and the proper planning, can be as green as Ed Begley, but a heck of a lot prettier.”
To that end, Snell is hosting a book signing at her store Saturday, May 16, from 2 to 4 p.m. with Mireya Navarro, author of the just-released “Green Wedding: Planning Your Eco-Friendly Celebration.” The store is 2204 N. Main St.
The idea is to reduce a wedding’s s0-called carbon footprint: for instance, cutting the amount of greenhouse gas emissions associated with producing material for the event and conducting the wedding itself, or relying on local food and recyclable materials.
Navarro’s book is loaded with tips and suggestions that often come from actual green weddings – organic menus, biodegradable, wooden stir-sticks for drinks, chartered buses for guests.
Snell’s store is loaded with green products, and is a kind of ground zero for Orange County green-living classes and events.
