O.C. residents can grab $2.6 million in home weatherization bucks

October 8th, 2009, 6:26 am · 14 Comments · posted by

Orange County’s Community Action Partnership has just been awarded $2,626,829 to help low-income families “weatherize” their homes, and save a few bucks on energy costs.

The money is part of the federal government’s stimulus program, which sent $68 million in weatherization money to the state, according to an announcement Tuesday.

To qualify, residents must earn75 percent of the state median income or less. Basically, that’s less than $29,172 a year for an individual, or less than $56,101 for a family of four. To see the full sliding scale, click here.

In all, the money is intended to help 50,000 households weatherize, boosting energy efficiency and cutting utility bills.

A side benefit:  jobs.

How does someone that only makes $29,000 / yr own a home in Southern CA. This stinks of corruption.

  • code3lb says:

What is the definition of “weatherize” and what items doe it include? How much money do qualifying familes get?

  • anonymous says:

I hope someone is thanking the working taxpayers for this handout. Our dollar is already in the doldrums, how much weaker will it get as our nation goes further and further in debt spending money we don’t have? All I can say is “BUY GOLD” because it will be the only thing that holds value once inflation hits.

Let’s hope that a fiascal like the one in Detroit does not occur. There were about 65,000 people fighting, trampling, scamming, pushing, and shoving for a chance at 3,500 checks. They were like animals and savages. It was chaos!

  • Marc960 says:

Lets think about this whole idea.
Our government is taking money from taxpayers that make more than $29K, and gives it to the “poor”. The idea is to lower utility costs and or pollution?

In the effort to make us all more Green and efficient shouldn’t that same money be available to the higher earners?
They have bigger homes and use more energy.

  • ocobserver says:

Marc960, this is all about the government trying to prop up a failing economy. The ‘green revolution’ is just the modern day dot.com era and is bound to fall flat on it’s face. The government and business colluding to blow another bubble. And, yes, it is stealing from the middle class and giving to the lower middle class and poor. It is another transfer payment scam disguised as an environmental program. Don’t be fooled.

Comes out to $52 / household.

    Job creation? Feh…

  • MegaBob says:

Ok, now wait one minute! How is-it someone making under 30k or under 60k (for a family) able to afford a house to begin with? Im my situation, in order to be considered for my first home I had to make over 100k, and my purchase price was under 400k!

I will never understand who makes these stupid rules!

  • Francine says:
