O.C. to make a splash in worldwide climate-change event

October 23rd, 2009, 3:53 pm · 26 Comments · posted by Pat Brennan, green living, environment editor

Hundreds of people will appear at the Outdoor Education Center in Orange Saturday, form themselves into a giant number 350, and pose for pictures of their formation from the air –becoming one of 4,500 ”350″ events around the world. 350india

The idea is to urge the governments of the world to reduce planet-warming greenhouse gas emissions to 350 parts per million — what organizers consider a “safe” target.

The event in Orange, likely the largest of several planned in Orange County, will have a multi-denominational religious flavor, said Margaret Henke, founder and co-chairwoman of the Orange County Interfaith Coalition for the Environment.

“The whole effort is geared toward raising awareness about our need to do something about global climate change,” she said.

Native American singers, as well as speakers from a variety of faiths — Christian, Hindu, Muslim, Jewish, Sikh — will be on hand, along with local politicians, a local green-living author and others. After a morning hike with the Sierra Club, a 5K walk with the U.N. Association and speeches, anyone who wishes can take part in forming the giant 350 around 11:30.

A tethered blimp bearing only a camera will then take photos to be posted the same day on the Internet.

It’s happening the world over, and it’s already started, said May Boeve of 350.org, the name of a Web site and also of the group that’s organizing the global event.

While some of the 350 events took place ahead of time — including cabinet ministers who held an underwater cabinet meeting, in scuba gear, in the Maldives to call attention to the perils of sea-level rise — the first official Saturday event was a sunrise walk in New Zealand.

“It may be happening as we speak,” said Boeve, who was in New York on Friday (Saturday in New Zealand).

She was helping plan a 350 event in Times Square, where images of 350 events elsewhere in the world will be projected onto large screens.

Events were being held in 175 countries as of Friday, Boeve said.

“New Zealand is kicking off the action, then it moves around the globe from there,” she said.

They’ll form a giant ‘3′ in India, a giant ‘5′ in London, and a giant ‘0′ in Quito, Equador, she said.

“We’ll have this global Scrabble game,” she said.

More underwater events are planned, including a ‘350′ formed by divers at the Great Barrier Reef; in Manhattan Beach, people will form a new high-tide line to dramatize the potential effects of climate change.

In Orange County, other 350 events are planned at the Mesa Verde United Methodist Church in Costa Mesa, on a lawn in Laguna Woods Village and on the San Clemente pier, where members of San Clemente Green will make a 350 formation.

The Orange event costs $10 for those who pre-register, $15 for those who show up on Saturday, and includes lunch and a t-shirt.

The one-time global event is meant to call attention to a climate change conference in Copenhagen in December; Boeve was unsure if 350 will become a yearly event.

“People need to keep mobilizing,” she said. “On Saturday, it will amount to the most widespread political action ever.”

Climate change–you mean the recent global cooling trend? Interesting that the media reports ice melting in one part of Antarctica but ignores that it is much deeper than normal in another part.

Of course one of the biggest boosters of all this is Al Gore who stands to make millions or maybe its billions if cap and trade should be passed. And last I had heard he has a large, energy inefficient mansion which he has not made more energy efficient. He ought to take care of his own large property before asking others who are less able to afford it to make sacrifices for something that they science is rather mixed about.

    • X-DEM says:

Global Warming. Apparently they will sing songs praising President Obama while they form the 350. Little do they know that climate change is a natural occurrence and where they will stand in their 350 formation was once thousands of feet under water!

    • jimmydee says:

Attendees will soon have time for plenty of future events. With less and less employed, everyone will have lots of free time!

      Yay!

Of course, our standard of living will be that of Bolivia, but…..

Lots of free time! Yay! Save mother earth!

Its also rather strange that a couple of different times I have encounter Green Peace people outside of Henry’s market who I think were promoting their anti-global warming agenda, although they start out by asking if you are concerned about the environment. I am and I re-cycle when ever I can.

In both cases I asked the person whether he was aware of FreeCycle.org. this is a grass roots effort in the US and other countries to keep usable stuff out of landfills by offering it to others who might be able to use. In both cases the people were not aware of this fine volunteer organization that is quietly doing something to help our environment without politics or trying to coerce others to do something. These environmental activists weren’t even aware of this organization that allows all of us to FreeCycle things we no longer need. And there isn’t the environmental load of usual recycling involving re-processing things to make something else.

When the planet started to cool a few years ago, “global warming” became “climate change.” In either case it is a giant hoax played by the greedy on the gullible.

    • SoCo Dave says:

4500 events with hundreds of people attending each event? I’d like to see the total carbon expended for these events.

I sure hope those t-shirts are handmade, using only organically grown cotton and natural dyes, and most people don’t arrive in gasoline powered vehicles.

One of the most environmentally friendly t-shirts, a plain white AnvilOrganic Cotton T-Shirt, consumes about 8.6 lbs. of CO2e over it’s useful lifetime per AnvilOganic’s website.

If 300 individuals attend each event, only half of them come in gasoline powered engines, and they have 3 persons per car and drive 5 miles to attend, according to the EPA they will consume 1294.64 barrels of oil. That works out to be in excess of 10 metric tons of CO2e.

      Go Green and stay home.

    • Marc960 says:

More lemmings lining up for a photo-op demonstrating ignorance.

The planet has been cooling for the last 11 years, how’s that for an inconvenient truth?

CO2 makes up 1/10th of 1% of our atmosphere but can alter planet temps? You’re kidding I hope.

You ought to look up for the Sun when you consider warming, which has cooled over the last decade. Few sun-spots means less energy and vice-versa. Never thought of that before?

Go outside Saturday or Sunday and stand in the sun, that heat you feel isn’t coming from the methane leaking out of your butt!

And the polar bear population is larger this year than last. I guess they didn’t all drown like AL Gore predicted. Idiot.

    • johnny says:

climate change is the largest hoax ever perpetrated on the American people.

    • mmkay says:

      Wow…these comments are kinda scary.

    • Eddie4 says:

9/11 is probably the largest hoax ever perpetrated on the American people.

    • Brian says:

I see that it’s now being referred to as “climate change” since global warming has been debunked. Back in the 70’s these same nuts were complaining of global cooling and that the world was going to freeze over.

Same mass hysteria similar to the swine flu craze going on now. Too many fools out there drinking the Obama koolaid and getting ready for a chip to be implanted in their head. Half the population is incapable of thinking for themselves, but they are allowed to vote. So sad.

    • Mark Alpert says:

Global warming fanatics, talk to me when you can predict the weather tomorrow with reasonable reliability. The scientific models prediciting warming are just guess work and do not explain prior historical climate changes.

    • Jeannie says:

HOAX alert. Bet they don’t provide any of the most recent data on global cooling. There will be no disclosure on how the original scientific data was cherry-picked to provide the GW promoters with their preferred conclusion. This is all about power grabbing for the elite and stealing prosperity from the people. It is about the loss of our country as we know it. The truth is out there if you seek it. It only takes a few minutes to begin finding out for yourself. Stop listening to the snake oil salesmen and judge for yourself. This link is a place to start.
This is a link to a speech by Lord Christopher Monckton who sued in the UK courts over “An Inconvenient Truth”. He won his case and the Judge noted 9 serious ERRORS in the movie. What he has to say will cause you to re-think even if you are a true believer in the GW Religion.

It never ceases to amaze me how humans can be manipulated to follow almost any absurd notion put forward by those that seek nothing but control.
Global Warming was a hoax and the charlatans that potrayed it as the truth have been exposed as the liars they are.
So what happens? The same liars change the game by giving GW a new name, Climate Change. Now who can argue with that ? Yet people are standing in line to be a part of a following that at its root is the control of your freedom.
I have often wondered what could cause an educated nation like Germany in the 1930’s to lose all sense of reality and follow people that would distroy their freedoms and lives. Fast forward to 2009 and I read about humans gathering to pray to the weather with the beliefs they can control it.
There is absolutely nothing humans can do to control the weather on Earth. Sure we can recycle, which is great, but we are unable to control what takes place as far as weather is concerned.
Our weather is predicated on the Suns radiation and the belching of Earths volcanoes.
Short of being hit by an asteroid the weather will do as it always has, whatever it likes.

    • Mariss says:

When I was a little kid I was sure a monster lived under my bed. Global Warming is the adult version of that.

    • bogmanoc says:

The top seven academies of science in the world all agree that global warming is real and man-made. Read that one more time and let it sink in. Do you really think the world’s scientists would put all of their credibility on the line for a hoax?

If you don’t want to believe broad scientific consensus, next time your doctor prescribes life-saving medicine, ignore that, too.

    • will says:

Good to see the increased awareness of the sun’s influence on the solar system.

There was an excellent article in the 2009 Farmers Almanac showing that despite an increase in atmospheric CO2, the earth has indeed experienced cooling over the past decade. Other planets have seen similar cooling. The article also pointed out the correlation between reduced solar radiance and cooling over the same time period. The global warming religion has been debunked and it’s pope, Al Gore should be defrocked!

    • OCCent says:

I get it, we should take reasonable steps to protect the environment. Recyle, drive more fuel efficient cars, conserve energy, etc.. But we need to do this in the way that don’t kill jobs. The greenpeace type folks generally care nothing about the economy, we’d all be living in huts and riding in mule drawn carts if they have their druthers.

    • K in LF says:

I dont understand the tittle.. ” to make a splash” ?
Where in this article is water mentioned except when mentioning new zealands cabinet meeting?

Just pulling titles out of out butts now?

    • Donkey says:

I see the censor can’t handle the truth.
Global Warming, climate change, or whatever you want to name weather worshiping is nothing but a hoax and a scheme to control your freedom as individuals.

    • Jim says:

Another Establishment funded event to try to get us to acquiesce to carbon taxes and a reduction in our standard of living. We can go green, and make a leap for humnity, but not when funded by eugenicists and elitists who will make good money of off our backs.

After all we should never miss an opportunity to drive away more businesses from what is already the most inhospitable business state in the country ( CEO Magazine, Forbes, Wall Street Journal, etc).
