California goes electric, with facilities near O.C.

A recent deal struck by the state’s  Alternative Energy and Advanced Transportation Financing Authority with Tesla Motors will add new electric car manufacturing to the state.

And the places that will benefit include potential locations in Long Beach and Downey.

The action comes shortly after the governor held a press conference touting a hydrogen-fueled rig targeted for easing emissions around such locations as the Port of Long Beach, one of the nation’s busiest cargo entry points.

“Tesla’s plan to continue expanding in California is exactly what our state needs as we look for new and innovative ways to stimulate the economy, build jobs and produce real solutions that will benefit our environment,” Governor Schwarzenegger said in a prepared statement released Wednesday afternoon.

The latest deal by the alternative energy financing authority will shift ownership of $320 million in equipment for zero-emission vehicles back and forth between the state and Tesla, allowing the company to save the 9 percent in sales taxes it would otherwise owe.

Of the money, $238 will help establish a production facility for the company’s Model S sedan, possibly in Long Beach or Downey. Other money will upgrade a Palo Alto facility and some to expand assembly of a roadster in Menlo Park.
