The Seal Beach Naval Weapons Station, which doubles as a wildlife refuge, will use $4.4 million in federal stimulus funding to place solar arrays on the roofs of two large administrative buildings.
The roofs needed repair, and Navy officials decided to add the panels in the process. A crane canopy also will be built and fitted with solar arrays.
The panels are expected to cut energy use on the base by 5.5 percent, saving more than $86,000 a year.
