Target “pleased” to resolve $500,000 air-pollution fine

The answer from Target Corp. was short and to the point: The company is “pleased to have achieved a resolution with the California Air Resources Board,” and “committed to compliance with all environmental laws.” targetgoc1

The company was fined $500,000, the air-pollution agency announced Wednesday, after being accused of selling products in its California stores, including at least one in Orange County, that violated air-pollution laws.

The products included portable fuel containers, portable generators, windshield washer fluid and air fresheners.

The air board said the company continued selling the products even after being warned of a pending enforcement action.

Such products generate pollutants such as volatile organic compounds, which contributes to the formation of smog. Target spokeswoman Bethany Zucco declined to discuss details of the case, saying she was limited to the company’s prepared statement.

please, get out of this state and leave all of the sensible people behind

no one’s going to miss you and your libertarian sort

If you had any clue about the health effects of the air pollution in California you would want to get out of California (at least LA/OC/SB/Riv and San Joaquin Valley portions) to save you and your children’s lungs and overall health (hopefully children aren’t an issue for you though). Enjoy the bliss of your ignorance.

I wonder what would happen if Target decided not to contribute to anymore California schools??? The air pollution board is a JOKE…

    True, true Ab…

How is it that Target was the only “Target” of this ridiculous shake down.

Many, Many stores, like Wal Mart, C.V.S…grocery stores, sale something deemed to be “CRIMINAL” to these guys. I wondered why all the air freshener stuff was pulled off the shelves, I thought the companies may have come up with a better kind. Nothing was said about all the OTHER kinds of room fresheners, like Fabreeze, are they next?

This amounts to extortion but of course they get away with it because it’s better than going through a multi million dollar trial.

How much you want to bet that at every AQMD and CARB adminstrators bathroom at home is a can of good ole’ fashioned FartBeGone.

  • Jupiter says:

If Target is so “committed to compliance with all environmental laws” why did the ARB press release say; “Further investigation found that the manufacturer had warned Target several times that the product was not formulated for sale in warmer portions of California. Target continued to sell the product even after state representatives notified the company of the violations and pending enforcement actions.” (http://www.arb.ca.gov/newsrel/nr121609.htm) resulting in the matter being referred to the State Attorney General.

Are you sure the Target quote didn’t get cut off and really say the are “committed to compliance with all environmental laws that we caught violating and only after we are threatened with legal action .”

Where do I now go to buy my windshield washer fluid? I always thought it was just water with some blue food coloring to make me feel like I was actually getting something.

  • scott says:

Deal with AQMD.. it is the worst agency to deal with. We got fined because we used rubbing alcohol to clean electronic parts… $25,000.
