Cash-starved state parks go better with Coke

March 31st, 2010, 7:45 am by

California State Parks, strapped for cash after deep budget cuts, are teaming with large corporations to clean up state beaches — including Bolsa Chica and Huntington state beaches in Orange County.

Coca Cola and Stater Bros. Markets are taking part in the new campaign, called “Care for Our Coast.” Coca Cola Bottling Co. will donate $1 to State Parks for every $10 purchase of the company’s products through April 25. During the same period, Stater Bros. will ask customers to make a $1 or $5 tax-deductible donation.

Donations also can be made online at the campaign’s Web site.

The campaign begins today.

In recession’s shadow, solar power shines

March 16th, 2010, 11:38 am by

The green, festively painted trucks roll out of SolarCity’s Santa Ana warehouse one behind another every weekday morning, carrying racks of solar panels, installation gear and solar workers — many of them new hires, a wonder in a region reeling from recession.

Workers at SolarCity in Santa Ana load a truck for installation work.

Employment also is up at SunRun, which helped local partners add 100 solar jobs in 2009 in the Los Angeles-Orange County area and says it expects to add 200-300 more this year.

The companies appear to be riding a wave of good fortune for the solar-power industry. Incentive programs backed both by the state and federal government, a rise in consumer interest and a drop in costs seem to be converging to keep solar installers busy bolting panels to rooftops across the country.

Natural Products Expo sets record

March 15th, 2010, 12:45 pm by

Last weekend’s Natural Products Expo West set an attendance record, organizers say: some 56,000 people from across the country packed the Anaheim Convention Center for the four-day event, which ended Sunday.

The Expo was exclusively business to business and not open to the public. But some of the products on display — from gluten-free brownies to organic shampoo to energy drinks – could well appear on local store shelves.

Friday, the first day of the actual trade show, also saw protesters from the Organic Consumers Association outside the Expo entrance, calling out shampoos and other products they believe do not meet adequate standards defining what is “organic.”

Protesters say panic, products aren’t organic

Cell phone and pocket cameras whirred and clicked as a group of about a dozen protesters got the Natural Products Expo off to a raucous start Friday at the Anaheim Convention Center.

“If it doesn’t have a seal, it ain’t the real deal,” the protesters chanted over a loudspeaker, as well as, “Expo Panic! These brands are not organic.”

They also held up 5-foot signs mocking shampoo bottles of several brands.

The group, from the Organic Consumers Association, contends that shampoo, makeup and other personal care products — some on display inside the convention hall — lack a seal from the U.S. Department of Agriculture that would certify them as organic.

Natural Products Expo is tinted green

Anaheim plays host this week to the Natural Products Expo, in which businesses will show off their healthy foods, organic shampoos and a dizzying variety of other items to retailers. The general public isn’t invited, although the trendier products could soon end up on local store shelves.

On Friday, the first day of the trade show, a small group of demonstrators — some dressed as shampoo bottles — will appear outside the Anaheim Convention Center to protest what they believe are insufficient standards for judging which shampoos, makeup and other personal care products are truly organic.

New energy group seeks stimulus millions

February 25th, 2010, 4:12 pm by

To hear Greg Trimarche tell it, Orange County is missing out — big time.

“Orange County is not getting anywhere close to their share of stimulus dollars,” Trimarche said. “We’re getting about 30 percent of the national average.”

This week, Trimarche, a partner at the Bryan Cave law offices in Irvine, did something about it. With Brandman University, Trimarche launched CleanTech OC, a new trade group dedicated to getting Orange County’s share of billions in federal stimulus dollars for clean-energy projects that remain unclaimed.

“If we do our job right, we should be bringing millions of dollars of clean technology grant money into Orange County,” he said.
